Growth Mindset

Definitions Taken From Mindsets The New Psychology Of Success By Carol Dweck

File:Forward thinking.jpg

Fixed Mindset Defined: Part 1:
“The view you adopt for yourself profoundly affects the way you lead your life. It can determine whether you become the person you want to be and whether you accomplish the things you value.  How does this happen?  How can a simple belief have the power to transform your psychology and, as a result, your life?  Believing that your qualities are carved in stone-the fixed mindset-creates an urgency to prove yourself over and over” (Dweck 6).

File:Thinking Man.jpg
Growth Mindset Defined:
“This growth mindset is based on the belief that your basic qualities are things you can cultivate through your efforts.  Although people may differ in every which way-in their initial talents and aptitudes, interests, or temperaments-everyone can change and grow through application and experience” (Dweck 7).

“The passion for stretching yourself and sticking to it, even (or especially) when it’s not going well, is the hallmark of the growth mindset.  This is the mindset that allows people to thrive during some of the most challenging times in their lives” (Dweck 7).

Part 2:

  • What are your thoughts regarding these definitions?
  • Are the definitions accurate?
  • How do they apply to your attitude and approach within the academic realm?

  1. Part 1: This happens because what you think is going to happen, will happen. I mean to a certain extent. If you think money is going to fall out of the sky, it will not happen. But if you think “Oh I suck at reading” or “I hate reading”, then reading is going to be a challenge for you. If you just change the whole way you think or say things, there will be a whole world of difference.

Part 2: I think the definitions are true because like she said, you get out what you put in. When I am faced with a challenge, I try not to think about it being hard, but to think about how I’m going to persevere through and get it done. This is really helpful to me because I am more efficient when doing work.

  2. Growth Mindset is a good for all people. The growth mindset people are the people who want to learn more and experience more in life. It’s bad for the people who have a fixed mindset. Those people think that they know everything and do not want to learn anything and are not content with themselves. You can have a growth mindset by saying to yourself that you have come this far and got it wrong but you have not gotten the right answer yet. Vice versa for the fixed mindset people. Having a growth mindset will help you see that you are who you are and you have not done it yet. A quote that reminds me of this is by Thomas A. Edison, “I have not failed. I've just found 10,000 ways that won’t work.” Everyone can do anything they want like accomplishing dreams on having that mindset that you can do it and are capable of doing it. This is a great definition and it really does explain how the growth mindset people have a good and positive impact on their lives and maybe other people around them. This applies to the academic realm in many different ways. Let's say when you are working on a piece of homework and you get stumped keep trying and trying until you get the right answer. In history we can look back at Thomas Edison, he made the light bulb which took many hours and experiments. He never gave up and finally after many hours he got the right answer and he changed the world forever. Just say to yourself when things get hard, “i’m not there yet.”

  3. Part 1:
Your overall success in life strongly depends on how you view yourself. The video explained how those who invision the word yet, instead of the word failure will be much more successful and will feel better about themselves, when difficulty arises. A growth mindset helps one see the positive, more constructive side of things, while a fixed mindset allows people to ware themselves down, notice failure more than success, and in the end, see themselves as less of a person when they make mistakes. Whether or not one has a happy and successful life, is truly in their hands.

Part 2: The definitions above are very accurate and well describe a fixed and growth mindset. I believe these definitions are important to understand because in the long run, they could either help, or hurt you. These mindsets strongly relate to academic success, especially with so much opportunity for failure. Only a few people will make it through high school with close to no mistakes, and when they arise, one will either react in a positive way, or negative way, depending on their mindset. Someone with a fixed mindset will most likely carry on that failure and drag it with them, instead of leaving it behind them and building off of it; Something someone with a growth mindset would do.

  4. Part one: You control your mindset and you can either have a fixed mindset or a growth mindset. This happens by the way you see things. If you see everything as an opportunity to learn and grow and get the best out of it, that means you want to grow as a learned and that results in a growth mindset. As for a fixed mindset, this happens by seeing everything as just trying to get the work done and focused on everything being right, and not focusing on your learning. A simple belief has to power to transform your psychology basically by just seeing the way you look at things. If you look at everything as an opportunity and want to learn for your own good, one could get so much more out of everyday things in life. On the other hand if you look at things just to get them done and over with, then that fixed mindset will just put you in a loop, and you won't get the full potential out of everything.

Part two: My thoughts on these definitions are that they really describe the growth mindset. I think Dweck thoroughly described and showed what a person with a growth mindset was like. I especially agree with the part where it says even when things aren't going good you still keep persevering through it all and I really agree with it. I think the definitions are accurate because from the video and what I have noticed while I have been going to school, the definitions hit spot on what a person with a growth mindset was like. The definitions apply to my attitude and approach within the academic realm by showing me again that I need to keep working hard with everything I do. I can get the best learning I can by having a growth mindset. Having a growth mindset while at school and even out of school will help have an positive impact on my everyday life.

  5. Part 1: You can simple it by the encouragement of things instead of saying bad or wrong you can say nice but here is what you need to fix. That can help the brain want to do more and have a better mindset about school work.

    Part 2:
I think that these definitions are good. She stated that you get what you put in. That is super true and encouraging to work harder.

  6. Part 1: I believe this happens because 90% of almost everything is attitude towards the actual task. An example that I think of is football if you go into a game thinking you will lose you are already mentally defeated and that´s half the battle and this is the same thing.

Part 2: I think these definitions are true and they also relate to my attitude in the classroom because coming to class motivated is very important.

  7. Part 1: When someone has a fixed mindset, they spend their time focusing on how smart they are or how much talent they have, when they should really be trying to develop their intelligence or talent. When someone who has a fixed mindset fails or is faced with a challenge, they give up or get frustrated. Instead of getting frustrated and telling themselves they can’t do it, they need to face the challenge themselves and try to accomplish something they didn’t think they could. Once you start telling yourself that you are one way or you can only do certain things, you will soon fall into that mindset. The day that you get a certain perception of yourself is the day that you start to hold yourself back. You never know what you are capable of doing, until you allow yourself to do it. The day that you stop telling yourself, “No, I can’t do that” or “I won’t do that because it is too hard”, will be the day that you accomplish things you never thought possible of yourself. Tell yourself that you can or that you will, and do it.

Part 2: When someone has a growth mindset, they take the abilities they have, intelligent and talent wise, and want to develop and grow them. They believe they can do this through hard work and dedication. I agree with the definitions above completely because it captures what the difference is between a growth mindset and a fixed mindset. The definitions are very accurate because if you keep telling yourself you are capable of one thing, you aren't ever going to grow or develop. With a growth mindset you challenge yourself and accept the challenge in order to get better. I always try to keep a positive attitude and let myself fail in order to grow. When I am faced with a challenge, I like to work my way through it instead of stopping or giving up.

  8. Part 1: A fixed mindset happens when they don’t try to learn at all. A simple belief can cause the butterfly effect and change them completely.

Part 2: My thoughts on these definitions are that makes a lot of sense for a growth mindset and the definitions are accurate. They line up with my academic realm.

  9. Part 1:
It Can transform you because if you have your mind set on one idea, you start to believe it’s correct and won’t think to explore new ideas.
    Part II:
My thoughts to these definitions are that they’re very accurate to how many people think and that it should be shared to that people can understand this and realize to expand
    ^^^^^
They apply negative thoughts because it can put closure on my thoughts which can also affect my attitude because it would most likely make me timid and not daring. It can also affect academics because when in a lesson, it wouldn’t be able to think outside the box for new ideas

  10. Part 1: Believing in yourself can be everything if you believe that you know everything and have nothing more to learn than you will never learn anything and you will always have the need to prove yourself to yourself and others. Having a fixed mindset can decrease your grades and your work.

Part 2: For the open mind set definition I think that those definitions are very good definitions and are very accurate. With those definitions you can see which people are closed minded people and open minded people. I plan to be and open minded person who is eager to learn and wants to learn new things everyday.

  12. It happens because we think that we can do it and believe that it's easy and fun to learn. We focus on our future and see a really good future so we try our best to learn as much as we can so we can be as successful as we can be.
It transforms our phycology because we want to be as successful as we can be so we can have a good life in our future. This goes for mostly everything not just learning, for example you could be playing basketball against players better than you so you take that as an opportunity to learn instead of being scared and quitting so you can learn some of their skills that you can apply.

    Part 2
My thoughts are that if we put those definitions into our head and apply them than we can be much more successful than we already are.
I think those definitions are accurate because some days I wake up and feel really out of it and some days I wake up and feel really good about going to school.
They apply to our attitude by how we feel about doing work or homework so you can chose to do homework with a growth mindset and not complain about doing it when if you chose to slack off and do other things that you don't really care about school.

  13.     Looking at these definitions, it is hard to break away from the fixed mindset teaching of my childhood. I’ve worried and known how fixed I seem to usually be and I struggle to move to the growth mindset. Although, I have made progress. Since the start of high school two weeks ago, I have been putting significantly more effort into staying on top of my work instead of it on top of me, as well as drinking more water, getting more sleep, etc. The growth mindset seems overwhelmingly better too. I have felt better in and out of school. I think these definitions are very accurate because it shows how superior the growth mindset is because you know you can and will move forward and be rewarded later with better circumstances.I am trying my best to transition and I know growth mindset can take more effort and time now, but in the future you are rewarded. Meanwhile a fixed mindset is maybe easier but much less rewarding. I am approaching assignments with more effort and vigor.

  14. Part 1.
You're the only person who can change your mindset. You choose to have a growth mindset or a fixed mindset. Nobody has the power to change how you think and what you choose, it’s all you. When you just think that you can’t do it, that it’s not good enough that’s a fixed mindset. When you keep thinking like that it’s gonna stay and you will most likely be stuck with a fixed mindset. One thought can change your mindset. One thought can change everything. If you think you can’t do something then there goes your growth mindset. If you don’t believe in yourself then you’re gonna have a fixed mindset. With a fixed mindset what we want is to drag ourselves down, to show ourselves that we can’t change if we fail. Don’t be dragging yourself down

    Part 2.
These definitions are accurate to me because you have to choose to have a growth mindset or a fixed mindset. If all you say is “I can’t do this, it’s too hard.” Then you’re gonna have a fixed mindset. But if you try to do new things and want a challenge then you’ll have a growth mindset. Nobody can choose what mindset you have, you choose it for yourself. If you want a growth mindset then you gotta be up for a little bit of a challenge. You will be challenged and you will do a great job. You just gotta think about the positive not the negative. You need to put your effort into what you are trying to accomplish. You need to put all that hard work that you’ve done into what you are trying to accomplish. You need to be able to push yourself. “This is the mindset that allows people to thrive during some of the most challenging times in their lives.” This statement is true because you should think about the positive things that will happen or did happen then all the bad things.

  15. Having a fixed mindset causes you to never want to try and just give up if something looks hard, because you assume that you are going to fail. This simple belief changes how you do everything causing you to not being able to grow as a person or to grow in your learning because you become lazy refusing to never try anything if it looks to hard. The definitions given I think are very well written and accurate. These definitions apply to how people including myself learn, because anyone can do well in school if they work hard, do their best and actually try, but if you don’t do any of those things and assume you are going to fail therefore never try, then yes you most likely will fail because you haven’t even tried to practice and learn what you are trying to be taught.

  16. Growth Mindset

This happens by us because we control our mindset. If we are willing to learn then our mindset follows and allows us to learn more. If you set yourself up for the future you are more likely to accomplish the things you are willing to accomplish in your future. A simple belief can have the power to transform your physocology by having a certain belief that you follow and set your goals for that power over your body. I believe having a growth mindset is magnificent for people because in a way it will prepare you for the future and what's to come. They people with a growth mindset are willing, willing to put their best foot forward in times of doubt. Everyone can accomplish the things they want to just that fact that you don't give up and keep doing the best that you possibly can to accomplish those things are the people with an outstanding mindset. Winston Churchill once said “Success is not final, failure is not fatal: it is the courage to continue that counts.”
My thoughts regarding Growth Mindset defined is accurate to what I believed Growth Mindset is this is because it has the same idea that I was having while watching the video and writing this prompt on it. The definitions are very accurate because they are basically saying that if you set you up for the future you will be more willing to succeed. They apply to my attitude by me wanting to put my best foot forward and doing as much as I can to have a good success in my life to reach my goals. I believe that what you put in is what you will get out.

  18. Part 1:
A mindset can change simple things in your life. This can be in any thing if you were to do Cross Country instead of walking on the first mile keep going thinking I can do this even if you are in last. This will help you by making you a better runner and make you have stronger perseverance. This happens because you have a boost of confidence this confidence will help you because now feel like you can do it and this will make you run even further next time. This will help your whole life because then you can feel more confident to do the harder math problem and then an even harder one and it keeps going until you succeeded fully and beyond.
    Part 2:
I think these definitions true in anybody's life. These are words that can help you get through some hard problems in life and in school. If you have a growth mindset you can achieve your goals not tomorrow but you can achieve them. I think that if you can you this skill in your everyday life then you can use this skill in school and it will make you do a stronger student and learner.

  19. Part one: There are two types of mindsets, growth or fixed, both are completely controllable by every person and both have an effect on our learning career. You can determine whether you have a fixed or growth mindset based on your own personal outlook. People with growth mindsets strive to learn and expand their knowledge, those in this category believe that you are never fully done learning. On the contrary, people with fixed mindsets focus mostly on getting work done. Fixed mindsets strive for straight A’s and scoring well on the next test, even if they sometimes let their work overrun their lives. Rather than noticing some success in their learning career often times people with fixed mindsets focus on the failure or the one bad grade. Though I believe it is good to care about your grades and doing well in school, when it becomes too excessive it can have a negative effect. One small simple belief can transform the way that we see our learning careers. If we shift our negative outlook on everything lousy that we do, to a positive reminder of the good things that we do, I believe a chain reaction could take place. If we radiated positive energy into our school work it could spread to every other part of our lives and to those around us.

Part two: I think both definitions are accurate and I agree with both of them. Professor Dweck describes vividly how it feels to be in each mindset. “Believing that your qualities are carved in stone-the fixed mindset-creates an urgency to prove yourself over and over” (Dweck 6) She helps both mindsets understand where the other mindset is coming from. Instead of viewing one mindset as “good” or “bad,” I think it is more important to understand that the paths to success are different depending on the mindset. Our paths to success are directly linked to what we do in school. I think that it can be intimidating knowing that every assignment affects our future. Rather than run from fear and hide in a study guide, I believe it is important to allow failure to help shape our future. Even though in the past I have been more of a fixed mindset, I strive to transform into a growth mindset and allow myself to build from my mistakes. If we start to change our outlooks now, in our academic careers, we are going to flourish later in life.

  20. When you think that your mind is fixed you feel like that is the only way you will ever be and that you need it to be good enough as it is. If you believe you can grow and learn then you will try to do so. The definitions make it seem like the author is a huge fan of the growth mindset and I feel like he is right to be so. I think they are completely accurate. They make me want to fit the definition of the “Growth Mindset” as much as possible.

  21. Part 1: I think that a simple belief can change the way you look at life because that one belief could be school sucks with homework, but if u think about it in a positive way like this homework is really helping my understanding then it changes the way you look and do things in life.

Part 2: I think these definitions are true because it is the way you look at things, and I think that it could effect my academic work because if you hate school and don't look forward to coming then it will be harder but if you do look forward to coming to school then it will be easier.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Part 1: A fixed mindset happens when you convince yourself of something and in turn make that thing happen. Like if you convince yourself that you are terrible at math than you will go into it with a negative opinion on yourself or that subject and maybe not try as hard. It´s kind of like mind over matter even if you may actually be good at something if you keep telling yourself that you are terrible at it you will start to believe it and it will start to be more of a challenge.
Part 2: I think these definitions are accurate and help you understand what a growth and fixed mindset is. They apply to your attitude and approach in the academic reach because academics will work out a lot better for you if you have a growth mindset. When you have a growth s you believe that success comes from effort and if you put more work in you will get more out of it.

  23. Growth Mindset
    Part 1:
A fixed mindset is when a person only focuses on the trait or talent they currently have. They won’t think about building on that talent. They’ll be pleased with where they are. They way you look at yourself can affect your future in a fixed mindset. If you look at yourself doing one particular thing, then with a fixed mindset, you will strive for that, and only that goal. Your brain will only be thinking about one thing and how to get there. There won’t be any thought process about a different goal. This could have a colossal impact in your life. If, for some reason, you don’t meet that goal, then you won’t get your mind off it. You won't’ try anything new, and will be attempting to accomplish that goal once more.

    Part 2:
The definition of Growth Mindset provided were quite accurate. With a growth mindset you have an open mind. You are willing to learn new things, and are not afraid to step out of your comfort zone. The definition covered all of this. It showed the advantages of having a growth mindset, and when you could use it. During my academics, it would be most helpful to have a growth mindset. In fact, it would be useful in having it in any activity you’re participating in. You will be completely focused in whatever you are doing, and will not have any trouble learning. It will lead you to having a successful future.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Part 1: Having a fixed mindset all depends on how you think and/or view yourself. If you have confidence in yourself, and you know that you can do it, thats a fixed mindset. If you know that you can do something rather than having to do something, and you want to get work done when it's maybe first assigned and never have it marked as late. If someone with a fixed mindset has ONE bad grade, or something that has failed or is late, they will always focus on that one thing until it gets done. At some points, fixed mindsets can get sorta bad. If you always believe in yourself, and you know you will be able to do it, that one time it can go upside down and you can fail having too much confidence in yourself. Maybe if we see things differently and know that it's okay to fail once and awhile and mess up, but to just fix our mistakes, it can create a repeatedly concept on mindsets. Growth mindsets in my opinion will help you strive for better things in school, and college. If you have a really good trait on yourself or a good talent like singing, the fixed mindsets will always stay with that, and continue to focus on just those things.

Part 2: In my opinion, I think that the definitions are correct. Mrs. Dweck helps us with both fixed and growth to know that fixed mindsets get us to not wanting to fail ever, and are always on top of things, while the growth mindset will fail at times, trying but not hard enough to climb back to where they began and stepping into others shoes and seeing their perspectives on growth and fixed mindsets. Depending on each mindset, it will always matter on where you carry your life onto and when it can start new beginnings. It also always depends on your attitude. With growth mindsets, you will always be open to new opportunities and up to new challenges, while with fixed, you want to stick to one thing and one thing only.

  25. Over the summer I read the Selection Series by Kiera Cass. I liked that the books were based on a teenager that was raised in a low economy and how she was brought up to extremely great conditions with a lot of money. I learned that just because you immediately step into a better place does not mean you have to change who you are for anyone else but yourself. This book series made me feel different about the way i looked at things/people.

  26. Part 1: What many people do not realise is the mind is a very powerful thing and if you believe something strong enough the mind can make it happen. If someone believes that they are stupid and nothing else then that is what they will always be, stupid and nothing else. But if someone believes that they have not yet reached their full potential then that is what they will do, reach their full potential.
Part 2: I think these definitions are very accurate because no one can succeed overnight. I can apply these definitions to my attitude because I try to have an open-mind about every aspect of my life. I think that I can apply this to my academic life because if I do not get a good grade on a test I will say to myself “I will get some extra help and do better on the next one” instead of saying “I am so stupid, I will never succeed at anything.” Having a growth mindset is extremely important because more people accomplish things when they fail, and failure is what leads to success.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Part: 1 This happens because of your overall morale, if you look at things more positively you can feel better about doing work and achieving a goal, instead of thinking of it as a bad thing. The reason that the simple believe can have such an effect is because instead of having a fixed mindset of the here and now trying to get everything done now and whatever way possible the growth mindset has you think of what about the future and a overall goal to achieve and to study and to make yourself better rather than seeming like it. I also think it has an effect on your self reflection, where the fixed mindset thinks poorly of himself and does not do so well and uses excuses as to why there bad while the growth mindset ahs you think of ways to get better and that you're not always this bad person that cannot do anything.

Part:2 I think these definitions fit well with the fixed mindset, it matches the pluses about the fixed mindset i.e. better thinking, positivity. I think they apply to my attitude and approach because instead of freaking out over a bad score in a test next time i study for the next one i will specifically work towards the previous ones i was bad at instead of saying i would be bad at it forever, it also helps with organization because with a fixed mindset you may blame others for problems instead of putting forward the effort to stay organized and staying on top of work.
