Summer Reading

Over the summer, you were asked to read at least two novels of your choice.

1) Briefly tell me what you read, including the titles and authors.
2) I want to know what you liked about the books, what you learned and, more importantly, what matters to you about the book's content? How does it resonate with you?
Please do not give me a summary; I care more about what you took away from the book.

*Make sure to adhere to proper conventions and proofread your response. If, for some reason, you did not read two novels, tell me about two novels you have read and enjoyed and answer the above.

  1. The two books that I read over the summer was, 2001, A Space Odyssey by, Arthur C. Clark and Left Behind by, Tim Lahaye and Jerry B. Jenkins. In the book Space Odyssey I read that there were cave men at first and then they found different tool and created the society. After many years Frank Poole and David Bowman went out to space to travel to mars. it took them many years. they had a catastrophe in the middle of space and Frank Poole died. After a few more years David got to a space vortex and went in and now he is the ruler of a star galaxy. What I loved about the book is how big space is. There is so many beautiful nebulas and other cool things. Space is very complicated. I read this book becasue I love space. The book Left Behind was a wonderful book. There was a plane and the Captian named Rayford Steel and all the sudden people were disseparing from left to right. When he got back home his wife and son had dissepared. him and his daughter Chloe went throguh a major time of suffering. Theses people were disspearing because of the Rapture. Rayford and Chloe became Christans and then Chloe and Buck vecame good friends and Buck went into a meeting with one of his clients and they thought he was the anit-christ. Now Rayford, Chloe, and Buck have to go through seven years of Jusgement. One thing that I learned from this book was that we never know when Jesus is going to come back and I also learned that you need to be a true Christian and not fake it. Always try to be a compassiontate person.

  2. For my summer reading project I read two books. The first book I read was Fat Kid Rules the World by K.L. Going and The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho. I liked fat kid rules the world because it addressed very real issues and you can relate to the book. I liked the alchemist because it spread very good life lessons and it says that you can do anything that you want.

  3. I read 2001: a Space Odyssey by Arthur C. Clarke and The Hobbit by J. R. R. Tolkien
I liked the action and the pacing for The Hobbit. 2001 a Space Odyssey has a confusing ending. The Hobbit has a good plot and is an enjoyable book. 2001 a Space Odyssey Is a really good book.

  4. This summer, I read Flush by Carl Hiaasen and Thirteen Reasons Why by Jay Asher. Overall, I learned so much from both books. I gained valuable life skills through these books and I strongly recommend them. Flush was an interesting book, and taught me to never back down from something bigger than you. Noah was put in a difficult situation, but believed in himself and his sister, so in the end, he succeeded. If he hadn't been this confident, the outcome would have been different. A thought that I considered after reading this book was, "How many people does it take to make something true? One." Noah didn't listen to everyone around him, saying his dad is a maniac, he believed the one soul that turned out to be correct. Thirteen Reasons Why was also a very good book that helped me understand the importance of how we view each other. Before you say something to someone, consider what they're going through. Consider what they're thinking. Everyone is fighting their own battle, and it's not our responsibility to make it worse for them. I've been doing my best to be kind to everyone, even if they're the opposite to me.

  5. Over the summer I read The Bourne Identity, by Robert Ludlum, and Inferno by Dan Brown. I loved both the stories in the two books, it was interesting and had me reading for hours. From the books I learned that you can’t trust everybody, and that mankind might die from overpopulation. I think all books should make you have that desire of finding out what happens next.Inferno, and The Bourne Identity were two wonderful books, and I would definitely recommend them.

  6. I read Diary of Anne Frank written by Anne Frank and also read 13 Reasons Why written by Jay Asher. In Diary of Anne Frank I liked how she was very descriptive on how she lived and how she related everyday things to the past events that happened to her. I also learned to always find happiness in the small things that can bring you down. Anne Frank found that by writing in her diary which I thought was unique and interesting. In 13 Reasons Why, I like how the author made different perspective in each event showing how the narrator and the tape was in the same event. In this book, I learned that even the smallest things can hurt someone even though it may not matter to others. Even though the book doesn’t resonate with me, I understood through the narrator’s point of view.

  7. This summer I read The Selection trilogy by Kiera Cass. The books were hard to put down and drew the reader in early in the story. One of my favorite things about the books were how relatable the characters and themes were. The books teach a lot of empowerment and individuality. The main character, America, is very different from the other girls in The Selection. She is from a lower caste, has lower career options, and so therefore is strange compared to her competitors. The most important content and lessons that I learned from the books come through in the themes. The books show how following what you believe and not giving up despite challenging situations is always what you should do. I think the trilogy houses a lot of really important lessons to learn going into highschool and to know for later in life. They show that holding onto your identity and utilizing what makes you unique is going to get you so much further in life than always trying to fit in and be the same as everybody else.

  8. Over the summer I read One of Us is Lying by Karen M. McManus and The Safest Lies by Megan Miranda. I liked both books because they were full of mystery and the unknown. Also, the books were so exciting to read, it made me actually want to read. What I liked about One of Us is Lying is how people from different backgrounds and different social groups came together and made a horrible time a little better for each other. I learned that even though there is something bad going on, there can be a bright side to it all. The book's content really mattered to me because it was very interesting and I could relate to all the characters. In The Safest Lies, I really liked how I was always left on a cliffhanger at the end of the chapter and how descriptive the author was. I really felt like I was in the book. From the book I learned that sometimes you have to go out of your comfort zone to be able to grow and move on in life. The book's content was very dramatic and full of detail which made it fun and interesting to read. Neither of the books resonated with me, but I really enjoyed both of the books.

  9. Over the summer I read Personal By Lee Child and The Racketeer by John Grisham. I liked Both books for different reasons. I liked the Racketeer because it was suspenseful and entertaining. I like Personal because it was very descriptive and very adventurous. In both books I thought how they were written was very good and the ending added to the story. In The Racketeer there were lots of twists and turns, this made the story very interesting. In jack Reacher they travel all around Europe and I felt like I was there with how good the description was. In both books I did not learn any thing but they were very interesting to read.

  11. Over the summer I read the Books I am second by Dave Sterrett and Doug Bender and the Book The Bucketlist by Kate Stathers. The Book I am Second is about people who in they lives they have messed up and lost everything they lived for and they somehow find a way to forgive themselves and find god. The Book The Bucketlist is about all these things that this girl wanted to do in her life and she travels the world doing things she has always wanted to do when she was a kid. I really liked the book I am second because there is a second chance for the people who had a point in their life where they gave up and then they found god and became a better person. I like the book The Bucketlist because it makes me want to do good now in my life so later on I can accomplish the things I want to.

  12. Over the summer I read "Heaven is For Real" by Todd Burpo and "Catch a Falling Star" by Kim Culbertson. I really liked "Heaven is For Real" because this little boy had so much faith, curiosity and fun at such a young age. It was also amazing that he had such an impact on so many people of all ages, this really taught me that no matter how old or young you are you can have an impact on people. The second book I read "Catch a Falling Star" I liked because two people who were totally different who also hated each other one being a small town girl and the other being a very popular celebrity teenage boy grew to like each other and help one another become humble but still have fun. This taught me to never judge someone right away no matter where they come from because you never truly know someone until you get to know them

  13. Over the summer I read "No Safety in Numbers" by Dayna Lorentz and “Everything Everything” by Nicola Yoon. I really enjoyed “No Safety in Numbers” because of all the action and suspense created in the book. This book is written from a first person point of view as it talks about four kids’ experience locked inside a mall with a deadly virus spreading like a wildfire. “No Safety in Numbers” taught me to live every moment to the fullest because you don’t know what is going to happen at any given point in time. I also enjoyed “Everything Everything” because of the meaning. “Everything Everything" is about a girl who has a condition which causes her to be deathly “allergic” to pretty much everything, resulting in her staying indoors 24/7. “Everything Everything” shows how important it is to break out of your comfort zone and explore new things. Find what you love to do, and do it. You never know who or what is going to make you genuinely happy and content.

  14. the two books I read were the Tale of Despereaux and Enders Game I learned a lot from both books. I liked Enders Game because the main character was in a camp with a bunch of kids almost twice his age but he was such a good leader and he was chosen to save the world. He was a natural born leader. So I think the message was you can do anything at anytime because he was determined even with him being so young. In Tale of Despereaux, a mouse meets a princess and causes trouble with his family because he wants to see her. I think the message of that book is size doesnt matter.

  15. Over the summer I read "Teach Me to Forget" by Erica M. Chapman and "The Fall" by James Preller. Ellery the main character isn't seeing a point in life right now. She tries to end her life but the gun breaks. She tries to bring the gun back to the store and replace it, but she goes to the wrong store. The security guard, Colter Sawyer, inspects her. Colter Sawyer is also also a guy that'ss in his English class. After he realizes what she had tried to do to, he does everything to make her change her mind. Colter wants Ellery to trust him. Colter has his own secret that makes him want to help Ellery. Ellery doesn't wasnt his help but he insists and doesn't leave her alone. This book taught me that you should help the people that are hurting. If someone is hurting you don't stand back and make fun of them, you help to save them.
The other book I read this summer was "the Fall' by James Preller. Sam may or may not of said something on social media that may or may not of caused a girl to commit suicide. Morgan Mallen. She was friends with Sam, but nobody liked her because she was different. Sam didn't want to been seen with her. Why? Because his friends didn't like Morgan. Sam writes down his thoughts in a journal and realizes that he could of acted differently. This book is about cyber bulling. Cyber bulling is awful and it shouldn't of ever started.

  16. The first book I read was called Brian's Hunt by Garry Paulsen. I really liked how persevering Brian was when it came to certain situations. I learned that if you are faced with a situation that seems nearly impossible, there is always a way out. SPOILER: Like when Brian was getting attacked by a giant bear that killed his friends, he kept fighting and stabbing the bear with the arrows he had left. He finally killed this bear when he easily could've gave up but that would've costed him his life.
The second book I read (which wasn't really a novel but filled with information) was called the Total Fishing Manuel by Joe Cermele. I was very interested in how many different baits you can use to catch one fish. I was also pleased on how much knowledge there was in general about fishing. I could go on and on about how you could find anything fishing related in this book but that would be to much. What resonated with me wasn't really how much knowledge there was but the experiences that some of these fisherman experienced. Like when they had a 10 lb bass on the line ready to break off and their ability to share these stories, made me feel like I'm the one catching the fish.

  17. This summer I read The Boy Who Dared by Susan Bartoletti and The Man Who Quit Money by Mark Sundeen. The Boy Who Dared is a novel based on the true story of a Hitler youth who was arrested, beaten, and tortured. Why? Because he was illegally listening to the BBC news and In the middle of the night, handing out flyers denouncing Hitler in his town. I also read The Man Who Quit Money which was a book about a man named Daniel Suelo who quit money. In 2000 he gave up his life saving of 30$ and started living life. A man has decided to follow Suelo to understand how he lives with zero money.

  18. For my summer reading I read the books Ghostly Echos by William Ritter and the book Changeling by Philippa Gregory.I liked the book Ghostly Echos because I really like both fantasy and murder mystery books and this one tied those 2 genres together. I didn´t really resonate with this book much because there wasn´t much content to relate to considering it was about murder, but I guess in a way I related to the fact that they had a lot of curiosity. This book taught me that you have to stand up for yourself and you can´t wait around for others to do something for you sometimes you just have to do it on your own. I like the book Changeling by Philippa Gregory because you never knew what would happen next. It made you keep turning the pages and wanting to read more.I wouldn´t say that the book really resonated with me except for the fact that it made you feel like you were there in that moment.

  20. The two books I read over the summer was the Fault in our Stars by John Green, and The Hunger Games by Susan Collins.

I enjoyed reading the Fault in our Stars because the book made me feel like I was in Hazel's shoes, and everything she did was very relateable. What mattered to me most about the book's content was how the people you love can impact you on another level. I learned that people will love you till the end, and they want you to be happy and move on once they are gone.

I loved reading the Hunger Games because to me Katniss was a caracter that I relate myself too. The part of the book that matters to me most was when Katniss began realising her feelings toward Peeta because she showed the readers that even if you put on a cold, mean exterior you can still be warm, and happy on the inside. When Katniss defied the Capitol by not wanting to kill Peeta it showed that she would die for what she believes in like many people would do today.

  21. During the summer i read two books they were The legacy of kings and the wonders of the invisible world. The wonders of the invisible world was a good book but some parts made me a little bit uncomfortable but the morale of it was that most people do things out of love and that made a big effect on me

  22. This summer I read Lamb by Christopher Moore and The Dark Tower by Stephen King. Lamb is a spinoff of The Bible, jokingly filling in Jesus’ missing years. I liked how this filled the space between when Jesus young and when he was old, without being too impractical. The Dark Tower is a sci-fi book about Roland of Gilead as he battles good and evil, internally and externally. I liked the literary techniques employed by stephen king.

  24. Over the summer I read “In the After” by Demitria Lunetta and “Paper Town” by John Green. In the After is about a girl who was home alone one night when suddenly an “alien invasion,” occurred and for years she had to live alone, never making a sound and never talking to anybody. I liked this book because it is a great dystopian novel and I love books about apocalyptic times and run down societies also like The Hunger Games. In Paper Towns a girl Margo decides to run away and leave clues behind for her secret lover Quintin who finds the clues and makes it his absoluta goal to find Margo. I like this book because it includes a lot of mystery and comedy and I love both of those. I feel that the dystopian genre really makes me think about the world and everything around me and makes me think that everything could be a lot worse in life and they have to deal with things that I could never live with.

  26. Over the summer I read Tuesdays With Morrie by Mitch Albom. The other book I read was I Know What You Did Last Summer by Lois Duncan. In the book Tuesdays With Morrie, I really liked how it was about a guy with a disability, and I learned to always to treat everyone the same, no matter what conditions they have. In the other book I read I learned how much I enjoy to read mysteries.

  27. I really liked that both books were full of suspense and were interesting to read. I learned that you can live without money and be perfectly fine and also you should stand up what you believe in. In the book The Boy Who Dared I thought that even though the young man knew he was going to get in trouble he still wanted to give the people in his town truthful information and that mattered the most. In the book The Man Who Quit Money I thought that finding a way to live without money and being the best person you could be is what really mattered in this book.

  28. The books I read over this summer Ender's Game By Orson Scott Card and World War Z By Max Brooks. I liked reading Ender's Game because of how the characters were very well set up and the conflicts were creative and the backgrounds went well with the stories and the events within and I liked the humor and tense moments. I liked reading World War Z because the actions and events in the stories seemed really believable and I liked how modern conflicts carried over into the story and I also liked how many of the characters were unique and in very different settings with riveting stories. In general I found both books to be an amazing read and very descriptive and had made you feel as if you were there/watching.

  29. This summer I read two books. I read Tuesdays with Morrie and You and Me and Him. Tuesdays with Morrie, by Mitch Albom, is a book about when or about 3 or 4 years after is college graduation, he gets a call saying his professor, Morrie has a disease and he knows what that means. Morrie will be close and maybe fully not be able to move any muscle in his body, and after time he will start to feel very sick and won't be able to breathe. The reason why the book is called Tuesdays with Morrie is because Mitch visits Morrie every tuesday.
The next book I read, You and Me and Him by Kris Dinnison is about the main character, Maggie and followed by her gay best friend, Nash. The first day of school they sit next to each other on the bus, and Nash eyes a “cute” boy, Tom. The first few days, they follow the boy Tom around and show him around since he is new. Maggie, is a little bit big, and this girl Kayla just loves to body shame her, and make her feel bad about herself, but little does Kayla know, Maggie really doesn't care what others say to her.

In all, my two books that I read over the summer, I loved and enjoyed reading a lot.
